“Online divorce records” can mean a searchable index, a case docket, a document image or an online order for a copy. Identify which of these the official site provides before treating the screen as the divorce document.
| Need | Official source | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| Issuing route. | USAGov - Divorce decree or certificate. | A divorce decree is obtained from the court clerk where the divorce occurred. |
| Historical supplement. | CDC/NCHS - Where to Write for Vital Records. | CDC does not issue state vital-record certificates. |
Finish with the record owner. If the search screen is only an index, use the record owner for the next step. The distinction makes the final result easier to verify later.
An index can identify a court and case; a docket lists case activity; an available image lets you read a filed document. An ordering page may only arrange delivery of a copy. Check the case reference, document title and filing date, and ask the receiving organization whether an ordinary download is sufficient or a certified copy is required.
Access differs by jurisdiction and record. California’s court guidance illustrates the distinction: public remote access to divorce case documents is restricted even where courthouse access may exist. Follow the actual court’s access instructions. If the image is unavailable, ask the clerk how to inspect or request that specific document; do not infer that the record does not exist.
Official guidance: California Courts: electronic case records; USAGov: divorce decree or certificate.
A divorce decree is a court order; copies route to the clerk where the divorce occurred, while divorce certificates route to state vital-record offices.

CDC/NCHS directs users to the state or local office where the vital event occurred and states the federal government does not distribute identifying vital-record certificates or indexes.
